Satisfaction with Information Provided to Infertile Patients Who Undergo Assisted Reproductive Treatment
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله
Objective: Some potentially modifiable factors, such as appropriate informing process to infertile patients, can affect their infertility knowledge and information. This study aimed to assess infertility information provided to Iranian infertile people undergoing assisted reproductive treatment. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, participants recruited were a convenience sample of all infertile patients receiving assisted reproductive treatments from Royan institute, in Tehran, Iran. Inclusion criteria was visit for first time and without any previous infertility treatment failures, and refer to the center between January and March 2015. To measure patients’ satisfaction with informing process about infertility, a 20-item tool made by researchers was used that included areas of cause of infertility, type of recommended treatment, diagnostic procedures, approximate treatment duration, success rate of the treatment, approximate cost of treatment and non-therapeutic factors in treatment success. Question types were yes/no, 5-point Likert scale, and choice of one option. Responses as 5-point Likert scale were analyzed by Heeren and D'Agostino’s approach. Results: Of 235 infertile patients entered, 200participants (100 men and 100 women) responded to the questionnaire completely, yielding a response rate of about 85%. The mean age of participants was 30.93±5.56. Regarding satisfaction with information provided about cause of infertility, male responders reported lowest mean scores of 3.59±1.05 compared to female responders (3.82±0.85) (P=0.078). Also, infertile women showed greater mean scores of 3.85±0.78 than infertile men (3.58±1.29) in satisfaction with information provided about type of recommended treatment (P=0.037). A statistical significant difference was observed between males and females in satisfaction with approximate treatment duration (3.26±1.04 and 3.58±0.93, P=0.031). Conclusion: The findings of this study provide that most of infertile patients participated were more satisfied with informing process related to cause of infertility and recommended therapies. Information about infertility should be provided more systematically to all treated patients by medical staffs, especially in success rate of treatment and financial cost of therapy.
