چکیده فارسی مقاله گوهر تعالیم بودا بر پایۀ قانون طبیعی (درمه) یا نظم اخلاقی نهاده شده است. این درمه با قانون حاکم بر کردارهای اخلاقی (کرمه) پیوند می‌خورد. این دو مفهوم در کنار چند مفهوم دیگر، بنیاد‌های اخلاق بودایی را می‌سازند. این مفاهیم در همۀ شاخه‌های بودایی به کار می‌روند، جز آن‌که تأکید بر آن‌ها در مکتب‌های گوناگون، با هم فرق می‌کند. در این میان، بوداییان غربی نیز کوشیده‌اند تا این مفاهیم اخلاقی بودایی را در چهارچوب الگوهای غربی توضیح دهند.

These two concepts, along with a number of other concepts, construct the foundations of Buddhist ethics. These concepts are equally utilized in all sects of Buddhism, yet, in different sects, different amount of emphasis is put on each of them. Meanwhile, the western Buddhists have also attempted to explain these Buddhist ethical concepts within the framework of western models.
