Discharge planning for colorectal cancer patients in Thailand
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله
Nurses play a vital role in discharge planning, especially for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who require complex post-treatment care. However, there is limited understanding of current discharge planning practice among nurses in oncology settings. This paper presents a subset of findings from our study to inform future developments in the provision of discharge planning. Study participants (N = 206) were recruited across Thailand via Facebook and the Line application. An online survey was used to collect data on how often nurses performed each of 18 discharge planning activities. Large proportions of nurses never or rarely performed the following activities: sharing discharge planning summaries or care plans with other healthcare facilities (48%); referring patients to other healthcare facilities (44.2%); or providing CRC patients with information about the disease (41.8%), financial resources (41.2%), and returning to work (39.3%). Our findings support existing evidence that nurses’ practice with respect to discharge planning is suboptimal. Additional strategies, resources, and support systems are required to facilitate nurses’ performance of the full scope of their discharge planning practice.
