Self-care and Standard Precaution Observance in intensive care nurses during COVID 19

Aims: Self-care behaviors and standard precautions are important for maintaining nurses' health. This research aimed to evaluate the relationship between nurses' self-care and standard precaution observance in ICU during COVID-19. Method: This descriptive-analytical research was conducted on the ICU nurses Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. A total of 140 nurses was included in the research through convenience sampling. The data were collected using demographic survey questions, Self-Care Inventory-Revised (SCI-R), and Compliance with Standard Precautions Scale (CSPS) (significant level=0.05). Findings: The greatest self-care means, among the participants, was 40.1±4.441 in the professional dimension and the psychological dimension had the lowest level of self-care (mean=3.557±26.97). The highest and lowest score of standard precautions was 20 and 3, respectively. The average precaution observance was 13.99 with a standard deviation as much as 2.931. Conclusion: The findings showed that there is a significant relationship between the physical dimension of self-care with the observance of standard precautions in the special care department nurses of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, with the increase in the score of self-care in the physical dimension, the observance of standard precautions also increased.
