چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Mourning and elegizing has an age-old history in Iranian culture. Mourning services and lamentation gatherings (rawda Khani) were common after Islam and before the Safawids, playing a significant role in expounding and strengthening Shi'ism in society. However, some have regarded the Safawids as the initiator of this ceremony and viewed it as an impression of the West.The present article briefly addresses the history of mourning in Islam, the tragic event of Karbala and how the ceremony was formalized in the Buyids reign.
