عنوان انگلیسی The antibacterial activity and phytochemical screening of flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum L.) on bacteria isolated from wound infections
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Amis: Wound infections are one of the most important problems in human life. Continued use of antimicrobial agents against wound infections lead to the appearance of antibiotic resistant bacteria strains. Flaxseeds have important pharmacological properties against various disease. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of flaxseeds extracts against different species of bacteria that isolated from wound infections in addition to investigate phytochemical compositions of flaxseeds.
Materials and Methods: This study was evaluated phytochemicals screening for flaxseed extracts. Also to examine antibacterial activity of aqueous and ethyl extracts as well as flaxseeds oil against gram positive and gram negative bacteria of wound infections by using agar well diffusion method. Various concentrations were used (200,100,50 and 25 mg/ml) for flaxseeds extracts
Finding: Phytochemicals screening for the crude aqueous and ethyl extracts of flax seeds revealed different compounds including alkaloids, terpenoids, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, steroids, phenolic compounds proteins and carbohydrates with few differences between them. Aqueous extract revealed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus faecalis only. While ethanolic extract and flaxseeds oil showed high inhibitory effect against all tested bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis and Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella sp., Proteus mirabilis. All these extracts showed increasing in inhibitory effect with the increased extract concentration.
Conclusion: Flaxseeds have high antibacterial activities against different species of bacteria of wound infections. These seeds have different phytochemical in their contents that could be a promising alternative to antibiotic therapy.
