Prevalence of β-lactamase-encoding genes in Isolated Acinetobacter baumannii from Clinical Samples in Sari, Iran
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله
Background and purpose:
The prevalence of
Acinetobacter baumannii
as a causative agent of hospital-acquired infections, particularly in burn units and ICUs, is a major concern due to its innate and acquired resistance to several antibiotics. This bacterium's resistance to carbapenems, the last resort for antibiotic therapy, is attributed to the presence of beta-lactamase expressing genes. To address this issue, this study aimed to determine the frequency of beta-lactamase coding genes and antibiotic resistance in
Acinetobacter baumannii
isolates from burn hospital patients.
Materials and methods:
In this descriptive-cross-sectional study,
during the years 2013-2015,
Acinetobacter baumannii
isolates were obtained from clinical samples of patients in Zare burn accident hospital located in Sari city. The antibiotic sensitivity of the isolates was determined by using the disk diffusion method. To investigate the prevalence of beta-lactamase genes, PCR was conducted for bla
VIM
, bla
IMP
, and INT.
Results:
Out of the 150 patients, 54.7% were men and 45.3% were women. The antibiotic sensitivity results showed that ceftazidime, cefepime, meropenem, imipenem, ciprofloxacin, amikacin, gentamicin and colistin had the highest resistance, in that order. It was observed that 31% of the isolates produced metallobetalactamase enzyme, while bla
VIM
, bla
IMP
and INT genes were detected in 35%, 45% and 60% of the isolates, respectively.
Conclusion:
Acinetobacter baumannii
isolates displayed significant resistance to cephalosporins and carbapenems in the current study. It is recommended to explore the microbial resistance pattern and determine the frequency of beta-lactamase genes to prescribe antibiotics rationally for the treatment of
Acinetobacter baumannii
infection.
