In this study, the physical patterns affecting the formation of an appropriate relationship between inside and outside of the house are questioned. These patterns help preserve the privacy of the house and also make this place connect to its outside environment. Since the optimal level of the relationship between the inside of the house and the outside is related to the residents lifestyle, the research is limited to a specific spatial-cultural area, namely the middle fabric of Kermanshah. The reason for selecting this fabric is the strong relationship between the inside and the outside of the houses, as compared to other fabrics which on the one hand, provides the possibility of simultaneous study of behavior and place, and on the other hand, increases the generalizability of the results to residential environments with similar lifestyles. Also the close relationship of women especially housewives with the house has caused the research question to be closer to the answer through the narrative of the female residents. The research method is qualitative content analysis. Data collection has been continued through open interviews with 16 housewives living in 9 houses in the middle fabric of Kermanshah until reaching theoretical saturation. After matching the initial findings from the interviews with the maps taken from the houses, the categorization of codes has been done based on the theoretical framework of the research in order to reach the answers of the resaerch questions. Results indicates that the optimal relationship between the inside and the outside of the house is one that it is controlled by house residents, i.e., from the inside to the outside. For this reason, the more diverse the spaces in a house are in terms of the degree of connection with the outside, the more efficient that house is in shaping the desired relationship between the inside and the outside.Three levels of communication between the inner spaces and outside can be seen in the investigated houses; Spaces with a strong connection with the outside, spaces with a controlled connection with the outside, and spaces with no connection with the outside. Also, two categories of physical patterns, namely "spatial layering" and "windows" help to achieve the desired relationship between inside and outside; The former, which is realized at horizontal and vertical levels and on a macro and middle scales, denotes the placement of houses private parts (living and sleeping parts) at depth and upstairs, as well as other house spaces, including open, semi-open and closed spaces in adjacency with pathways, making these spaces a buffer for private spaces.Combining the mentioned spaces with each other is efficient in building more layers for the house and thus strengthening the hierarchy and protecting the privacy of private spaces more. In the meantime, the position, size, depth, proportions, insulation or lack of which, the ability of “windows” to be open or closed and their adjacency with the outside can affect the quality of the inside-outside relationship on a micro scale. Another important result is that in these houses, due to the long-term presence of the woman (mother) in the kitchen, this space has become the heart of the house, and it is one of the most effective spaces that, if adjacent to the outside, helps to strengthen the relationship between inside and outside. |
