Reasons Affecting Nursing Students' Career Choice in Turkey - a Cross-sectional Study Running Head: Career Choice
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله
Background and purpose:
Career choice, which is one of the most important decisions throughout life, shapes the conditions under which the individuals will spend their future, their income level, and the related lifestyle and life quality. This study was conducted to determine the reasons affecting the career choice among Turkish nursing students.
Materials and Methods
:
This is a cross-sectional study. The universe of the study consisted of 168 schools providing nursing education in Turkey. One nursing school from each of the seven geographical regions of Turkey was sampled by drawing lots. Power analysis was performed to determine the sample size. The sample size consisted of 2681 nursing students. Personal information form and
Vocational Choices in Nursing Scale
were used to collect the data. Mann Whitney U test, ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis test and analysis of variance were used to evaluate the dat
e.
Results:
It was determined that the mean score of the Vocational Choices in Nursing Scale was high (
101.41 ± 24.89
) and the mean score of the congruence subscale (
70.51 ± 20.83
) was higher than the mean score of the survival subscale (
30.90 ± 10.24
). There was a significant correlation between the socio-demographic characteristics of the students and the total scale score and subscales of the Vocational Choices in Nursing Scale (p<0.05). In the Vocational Choices in Nursing Scale, the students obtained the highest score from the item "I always wanted to help people" and the lowest score from the item "Nursing is a high-paying job".
Conclusion:
It was determined that the career choice differed according to the regions, and the students chose the nursing profession for their willingness to help and job opportunities. The high mean score obtained by the students in the
Congruence
subscale is important since it indicates that they made a conscious choice. In order for young people to make the right decision in choosing a profession, there is a need for informing members of the profession and educational institutions.
