Innovative Nanomaterials for Periodontal Disease Management: Antibacterial ZnO Nanoparticle-Sodium Alginate-Gelatin Composite
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله
The development of effective antibacterial agents is crucial in combating periodontal diseases, which are prevalent oral health conditions characterized by inflammation and bacterial infection of the supporting structures of teeth. In this study, we present a novel fabrication method of antibacterial zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles incorporated into a sodium alginate matrix for the treatment of periodontal diseases. ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized using a sol-gel method and characterized for their size, morphology, and antibacterial properties. Sodium alginate, a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer, was used as a carrier matrix for the ZnO nanoparticles. The fabricated composite material was evaluated for its antibacterial efficacy against common periodontal pathogens, and the results demonstrated that the ZnO nanoparticle-sodium-alginate composite exhibited significant antibacterial activity. Furthermore, the composite material exhibited excellent biocompatibility, with no significant cytotoxic effects on human gingival fibroblast cells. To assess the impact of
the fabricated composite on dental issues, an in vitro biofilm model was employed, and the ZnO nanoparticle-sodium-alginate composite effectively disrupted and inhibited the formation of oral biofilms is known to contribute to the progression of periodontal diseases. In conclusion, the developed ZnO nanoparticle-sodium-alginate composite presents a promising approach for the treatment of periodontal diseases, offering a potential solution for improving oral health and managing dental issues associated with these conditions. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of this composite material in clinical settings.
