Development of a Tragacanth-Enhanced Hydrogel-GQD Probe for the Detection and Identification of p-Phenylenediamine

P-phenylenediamine is an aromatic amine compound widely used as a precursor in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, plastic production, and the production of industrial and hair dyes. However, its presence in industrial wastewater poses significant environmental risks, leading to contamination of water, animals, and even humans. While few studies have explored the detection of PPD using fluorescent probes, this research focuses on the use of a synthesized tragacanth-poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide-GQD) hydrogel nanocomposite for such detection. The hydrogel nanocomposite demonstrated excellent selectivity and sensitivity for P-phenylenediamine detection, showing potential as an effective fluorescence probe at pH=4. The detection mechanism is based on static quenching induced by the interaction with P-phenylenediamine. The study revealed that the hydrogel nanocomposite has a linear response between 0.6 and 12 ppm, with high sensitivity and a detection limit of 0.181 ppm. Moreover, the results from analyzing real water samples confirmed the nanocomposite's reliability, stability, and practicality for monitoring P-phenylenediamine contamination in water systems.
