عنوان انگلیسی PROBLEMS FACED BY OUTPATIENTS UNDERGOING GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER CHEMOTHERAPY AT HOME AND BEHAVIORS USED TO COPE WITH THESE PROBLEMS
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Introduction : Gastrointestinal cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Patients with gastrointestinal cancer undergoing chemotherapy need to cope with the problems faced, asit will increase their quality of life and ability to take care of themselves. Therefore, it is important to determine patients’ coping behaviors and the effects of these behaviors on nursing care. The aim of the study was to explore problems faced by outpatients undergoing gastrointestinal cancer chemotherapy at home and behaviors used to cope with such problems. Materials and methods: This descriptive study was performed at outpatients’ chemotherapy units of the Divisions of Medical Oncology at two hospitals of the medical school of a state university in Ankara, Turkey. The Nightingale Symptom Assessment Scale and a questionnaire developed by the author comprising questions about demographic characteristics of the patients, problems they faced, and their behaviors to cope with side effects of the therapy were administered to 88 patients admitted to the outpatient chemotherapy units to receive their third course of chemotherapy. Results: The patients mostly experienced nausea–vomiting (73.9%), malaise–fatigue (88.6%), loss of appetite (69.3%), and changes in taste and/or smell (54.5%) following chemotherapy. The most frequent behaviors of the patients to cope with these problems were “taking antiemetic drugs” (46.6%), “resting frequently/spending the day lying or sleeping” (87.5%), and “taking care of oral hygiene” (27.3%). The general well-being of the patients was as follows: 13.6%, “very good”; 67%, “good”; 15.9%, “fair”; and 3.4%, “poor.” Also, 40.9% of the patients received education on the side effects of the chemotherapy, while 59.1% did not. Conclusion: Individualized educational programs on the side effects of the therapy and the ways to cope with these effects should be initiated for the patients before the therapy and maintained throughout the therapy at the outpatient centers.
