Study of Correlated Factors with Nutritional Behaviors in Elementary School Students in West of Guilan Province

Background: Pre-adolescence is an essential time for the formation and stability of behaviors. The aim of this study was to determine the correlated factors with nutritional behaviors in elementary school students in west of Guilan province. Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study,300 fifth-grade students of primary schools of Guilan province in north of Iran were randomly selected, in 2017. The information of demographic characteristics, nutritional behaviors (taking breakfast, snacks, healthy foods and junk foods), barriers and cues to action were collected. Data analyzed by multiple regression analysis and correlation on SPSS software. Results: There was no significant relation between demographic characteristics and nutritional behaviors(P> .05) .65.4% students used breakfast all days of a week, while 7.3% came to school without breakfast. 31.4% taking snacks only once a day and 12.8% did not consume the daily snack. In the field of food consumption,45.3% had desirable status in taking healthy foods, and 90.8% had desirable status in not taking junk foods. The most important barriers of having breakfast during the week in school were lack of appetite and adequate time, and on vacation, was to be alone. Barriers were dislike milk, embarrassment of taking bread and cheese as a snack, and the lack of fruits and vegetables at home(P <.05). The important cues to action were mothers(76.5%), fathers(44.5%) and then health workers and teachers, respectively. Conclusion: Nutritional behaviors should be improved. It is needed to focus on reducing the most important barriers through the important cues to action in educational interventions.
