عنوان انگلیسی The Prevalence of Absolute and Functional Iron Deficiency Anemia among Different Tumors and its Association with Disease Stage and Patients’ Performance Status in Imam Ali (AS) Hospital in 2014
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Background: Anemia is a common problem in cancer patients. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of absolute and functional iron deficiency anemia among different tumors and its relationship with different stages of their disease. Methods: This study was performed on 597 cancer patients referred to Imam Ali (AS) Hospital in Zahedan. Tests included ferritin, serum iron, and transferrin saturation, CPR, ESR and CBC. The tumor type and tumor stage were recorded. The data were analyzed using SPSS ver.19 using Chi-square test. Results: In all 457 patients (76.5 percent) had solid tumors and 140 (23.5%) were diagnosed with hematologic malignancies. Among the solid tumors functional iron deficiency had the highest prevalence (53.2%), but in hematologic malignancies greater percentage of patients had iron deficiency (47.1%) (P=0.021). Significant differences between the various stages of disease was not observed in terms of degrees of iron deficiency (P>0.05). Conclusions: Hematologic malignancies, solid tumors had a higher rate of absolute and functional iron deficiency anemia. But there was no difference between the different Stages of the disease.
